26-year old righty swinging outfielder Tyler Graham has been solid in the minors so far this season. Graham has played in 67 games in AA+AAA-ball so far this year and he is 66 of 196 (.337 avg, .819 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 1 homer, 19 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. Despite his solid season Graham is behind quite a few players on the organizational depth chart. The Giants could still promote him when rosters expand September 1st as long as he continues to play well as they could use his speed down the stretch.

Zach Wheeler is off to a slow start as a pro for the San Francisco Giants

20-year old righty starting pitcher Zach Wheeler was the Giants’ #3 rated prospect coming into this season. He was a first round pick last season but he signed to late to pitch in 2009. He has started 7 games in A-ball so far this season for the Giants and he is 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Wheeler has whiffed 33 batters in only 26 2/3 innings this season but he has also walked 17 batters which has got him into some trouble. Wheeler just needs to learn how to pitch as the stuff is there and the Giants will likely take it slow with him.

Madison Bumgarner is back into a good groove in AAA for the San Francisco Giants

With Todd Wellemeyer struggling this season for the Giants they might give Madison Bumgarner a call at some point this year. Bumgarner came into this season as the Giants’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America. But he had a rough spring training and he was not too good in AAA early this year. Bumgarner has gotten into a groove for his AAA team as his numbers continue to improve. Bumgarner has now started 11 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. He has given up 66 hits in 62 2/3 innings so far this year but he has minimized the damage a bit by only walking 19 batters. Bumgarner looked good at the end of last season with the Giants working in 4 games (1 start) in which he was 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.

Buster Posey is getting closer to San Francisco

The Giants decided to re-sign Bengie Molina for one more year to give Buster Posey a little more time in AAA. The 23-year old righty swinging catcher Posey is the Giants’ #1 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Posey has played in 32 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 43 of 121 (.355 avg, 1.026 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 5 homers and 24 RBIs. He has now played in 157 games in his three years in the minors and he is 193 of 580 (.333 avg, .973 OPS) with 119 runs scored, 24 homers, 110 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He did look a tad overmatched last September in his first taste of the majors. He played in 7 games last season for the Giants and he is 2 of 17 (.118 avg, .235 OPS) with 1 double. I don’t think he’ll have those same problems the next time the Giants call him up.

Joe Borchard is ripping the baseball in AAA for the San Francisco Giants

31-year old switch hitting outfielder Joe Borchard is killing the baseball in the minors so far this season. He has played in 24 games in AAA for the Giants so far this year and he is 29 of 79 (.367 avg, 1.103 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 5 homers and 22 RBIs. Borchard needs to keep playing well and hope that either someone get in a deep slump in the outfield for the Giants or that someone gets hurt for him to get another chance at the major leagues. Borchard last played in the majors in 2007 with the Marlins. Borchard has played in 301 games in his major league career and he is 147 of 716 (.205 avg, .636 OPS) with 89 runs scored, 26 homers and 77 RBIs. He often has looked overmatched at the major league level as he has whiffed 222 times against big league pitchers.
