The Giants have called up 23-year old lefty swinging C/1B Buster Posey. Posey will likely be the starting 1B for the Giants from now on with Aubrey Huff switching to LF. Posey was the Giants’ #1 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. He played in 47 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 60 of 172 (.349 avg, .995 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 6 homers and 32 RBIs. Posey also was showing improving plate discipline in the minors as he walked 28 times while whiffing 30. Posey got his first taste of the majors late last season playing in 7 games for the Giants in which he was 2 for 17 (.118 avg, .235 OPS) with 1 run scored. The Giants think he will do much better this time around and despite using him at 1B his future will still be at catcher.

The San Francisco Giants need to make a move for a outfielder

With the Giants being at fully near strength with the return of Freddy Sanchez and Edgar Renteria I think they should make a move for a RF. Luke Scott (Orioles), Austin Kearns (Indians) and David DeJesus (Royals) will likely all be available at the trade deadline or before. Of those three I think that Luke Scott would cost you the most but he is probably the best player. I think the Royals would jump at the chance to get someone like Sergio Romo from the Giants. But in the end, Austin Kearns would be the cheapest route in terms of what the Giants would have to give up to get him. With that in mind I would trade with the Indians who would likely be willing to take Eugenio Velez and Ryan Rohlinger for him.

The San Francisco Giants activate Edgar Renteria from the D.L.

The Giants have activated 33-year old righty swinging shortstop Edgar Renteria off the D.L. He has played in 20 games for the Giants this year and he is 24 of 76 (.316 avg, .764 OPS) wtih 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Giants have sent Ryan Rohlinger back to AAA to make room on the roster for Renteria. Rohlinger played in 7 games for the Giants this year and he was 2 for 10 (.200 avg, .473 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.

UPDATE: (5/27/2010) - Well that didn’t take long. The Giants have placed Edgar Renteria back on the D.L. with a strained right hamstring. Renteria played in 3 games before reinjuring himself in which he was 4 of 10 (.400 avg) with 1 run scored, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Juan Uribe will move back to SS to start.
