The Giants have selected 24-year old righty reliever Luis Perdomo in the Rule 5 Draft. Perdomo pitched in 55 games (0 starts) in A + AA ball last season and he was 7-3 with 20 saves, a 2.36 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Perdomo only allowed 49 hits while whiffing 82 batters in only 72.1 innings last season. This was a good move for the Giants as Perdomo could definately help them out in the bullpen in 2009.

The San Francisco Giants sign Edgar Renteria

The Giants have signed 33-year old righty swinging shortstop Edgar Renteria to a 2-year, $18.5 million dollar deal. Renteria had an off year in 2008 for the Tigers played in 138 games in which he was 136 for 503 (.270 avg, .699 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 10 homers, 55 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The Giants figure that he will produce more like his major league career line because of his return to the National League where he plays better. Renteria has played in 1,860 games in his major league career and he is 2,070 for 7,140 (.290 avg, .752 OPS) with 1,090 runs scored, 127 homers, 817 RBIs and 280 stolen bases. A lot of experts think that the Giants overpaid for Renteria but I disagree with them because I think a return to the N.L. will help him big time. In two years in the American League, Renteria played in 291 games in which he was 308 for 1,126 (.274 avg) with 169 runs scored, 18 homers, 125 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. But, in 11 seasons in the National League, Renteria has played in 1,569 games in which he was 1,762 for 6,014 (.293 avg) with 921 runs scored, 109 homers, 692 RBIs and 265 stolen bases. Look for Renteria to have a good couple of years for the Giants.

The San Francisco Giants sign Bobby Howry

The Giants have signed 35-year old righty reliever Bobby Howry to a 1-year, $2.75 million dollar contract. Howry pitched in 72 games (0 starts) for the Cubs last season and he was 7-5 with 1 save, a 5.35 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Despite those sub par numbers last season the Giants will probably use Howry in the 8th inning to set up Brian Wilson. Howry has now pitched in 668 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 42-43 with 66 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. This was a good signing for the Giants who are building a pretty deep bullpen for 2009.
